ARTIST STATEMENT

The process and result of making art means more to me than the creation of a beautiful object or pleasing replication of an image.  As with life not all images realistic or abstract are always pleasant.  As an artist I expose myself to an audience that looks for something in my work to identify with.  My portrait work reveals a deep part of who I am and introduces the viewer to countless strangers and the stories they tell.   My political art as a form of commentary on societal issues goes back to the days of standing up in protest against the Vietnam War.  Art as a form of protest and enlightenment provides a platform to express feelings that might otherwise be censored.  My art is driven by the social and political world around me sometimes objective other times completely abstract and conceptual.  The process of my art comes from years of experimentation, repetition and countless hours of practice.  It is this process that brings meaning and joy to my life.  The work of making art is never a burden nor do I tire from the continuous search of learning.
